After having read works like The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath and The Outsiders, I was completely unprepared for the Frank Herbert science fiction masterpiece. It was assigned summer reading between junior and senior year, which I did not initially appreciate, but I ended up reading it cover to cover in maybe five days, then diving back in again. It was exactly what teenage me needed: high concept science fiction with elements of fantasy interwoven with economics, ecology, philosophy, psychology, religion, metaphysics, sociology, and more.
